Pewley Down Conservation Volunteers

Pewley Down Volunteers have had a good summer, thanks mainly to the volunteer brushcutters, who have kept
the dogwood and privet at bay. 1829 Orchids were counted by a group of us on Monday 4 July. On Saturday
6 August we counted 429 male Chalkhill Blue butterflies, with help from Gail Jeffcoate of Butterfly Conservation.
On Saturday 6 September we jumped around to catch and release grasshoppers with David Baldock, author of
Grasshoppers of Surrey. Pewley Down Museum has now expanded to a wooden box, from a shoe box. Thanks to
those of you who have donated precious specimens, such as a stag beetle and a large dragon fly. It is available
to any children's groups who would like to have a look at it. We would still be grateful for more dead insects
and other natural curiosities, as well as small plastic boxes. The Pewley Down Volunteers meet this Saturday
morning; 10.00 am at the top of Pewley Hill. Tel. 564021.

HTAG Road Reps Meeting

There was a full agenda at the Road Reps meeting on Monday. We were very pleased to welcome Jennifer Anderton
from SCC who gave us lots of ideas about organising junk swaps and disposing of unwanted goods to those who
might want them. We will make some suggestions for your consideration. We were also glad to welcome again
Cllr Sarah Di Caprio who brought us the news that it is very likely that the National cycle route 22 will
not now pass over Pewley Down but be routed through Wonersh and Bramley. HTAG depends on many very willing
and talented volunteers and we must make sure that they are not out of pocket. We discussed ways of raising
money to pay for the services we take for granted eg the website and Bob's work on planning. Hopefully
the minutes will be on site soon.

Advice for Kids from Bill Gates

Love him or hate him, he hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, here's some
advice. Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things kids did not and will not
learn in school. He talked about how feel-good, politically correct teaching created has created a generation of
kids with no concept of reality, and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. To read on click

Wick was at the centre of the Herring industry around 1860 - 1890. At this time around 1000 boats would
have been in the harbour at any one time disgorging their catch of herring. The building has always been a

Recipe for De-Lux Victorian Orange Marmalade

This recipe was made available to HTAG members by Elizabeth Douglas. She writes: My grandmother always used this
recipe which came from her mother, Emma Smith, later Mrs Bennett. Emma was born in Marylebone in 1829, the
only surviving daughter of Thomas and Frances Mary Smith who had a fruiterer's shop in Welbeck Street.
Thomas died in 1838 and the shop was subsequently run by his widow and this recipe - very similar to one
given in Eliza Acton's "Modern Cookery" in 1845 - evidently came from the shop. To read on click
