Pewley Down Conservation Volunteers Update June 2007
Our annual count of Pyramidal Orchids will be on Saturday 7th July at 10 am, led by Margaret Notley. Please come and join us in our 5th
year. As ever the Pyramidal Orchids look as if they will be sensational. Vanessa has also found 2 Spotted Orchids this month.
Currently there is an exhibition of Richard Notley's photographs of Pewley Down at the Guildford Institute, which includes one of the
Man Orchid. On Weds. 27 June, at 2.30pm. Richard will be speaking to the Natural History Society about Pewley Down, at the Institute,
(small charge to non-members).
On Saturday 4th August at 10 am Peter Curnock will lead the count of the Chalkhill Blues. The information on butterflies is building
up, as Peter is doing his weekly transect for the third year.
On Saturday 1 September at 10 am, David Baldock, author and entomologist, will lead a search for Grasshoppers and Crickets on Pewley
Down. This is an ideal occasion for children, so please bring your children, grandchildren, neighbours etc.
In preparation for grazing, the brush on the Big Bank will be weedwiped in the week beginning Monday 25 June Some of the tougher
scrub might be indigestible even to the cattle. This is weather dependent, so a specific time cannot be given. The rest of Pewley
Down continues to be kept under control by the doughty team of brushcutters: Richard Notley, Peter Curnock, Ted Espir and David Smith.
Bugs and Butterflies flourish in Guildford's gardens. In order to demonstrate that Guildfordians cherish the bugs, would any of
you be prepared to enter the Guildford in Bloom competition for Best Garden for Wildlife ? It only needs an e-mail to
parks@guildford.gov.uk giving your address. The entry date is Friday 22 June, but they will not turn away late entries. Your
garden will then be visited by an expert volunteer, and you may well win a prize ! Any queries to Sally Crundwell at GBC, 505050.
The Saturday Workparties at the beginning of each month are going well, but we would welcome more assistance from Bronze,
Duke of Edinburgh, secondary school students. If you have any contact with schools do remind them that they are very welcome to
send their Bronze DofE candidates to work on Pewley Down from 10 am to midday.
