Country Walks
| |
Another year of Country Walks is now drawing to a close (the 11th year in fact!) and below are details of the
last walks next weekend. The countryside is now displaying all the signs of autumn: leaves tinged with gold,
fruit and nuts galore, leaf litter now carpets woodland floors, fungi in abundance and new catkins dangle from
Hazel shrubs foreshadowing next year's spring. To read on click

| Royal Surrey County Hospital Rally
| |
Guildford High Street was packed on Saturday, 21 October, for the rally organized by Anne Milton MP and Jeremy Hunt
MP to launch the fight against the possible closure of The Royal Surrey County Hospital. In "total, united and
implacable opposition" to plans for the potential closure, speakers from all parts of the community, including MPs
from surrounding constituencies, local Labour councillors, union, worker, consultant and patient representatives,
addressed the crowd, maintaining that the NHS is in "meltdown". Following the "sham consultation" process relating
to local hospital closures last year, Jeremy Hunt declared that the people will not stand for another such fiasco.
Speakers for UNISON asserted that it should not be a case of either the Royal Surrey or St Peter's at Chertsey, but
that it should be neither. Professor Chris Marks (consultant) said that the exemplary performance of the Royal
Surrey meant that there were neither clinical nor financial grounds for the closure.
Indeed, as a well performing centre of excellence, there was every reason to support the hospital. The rally closed
with Anne Milton thanking people for their support and calling for every person to write individually to Patricia
Hewitt registering their objection to the Government's closure plans. Whilst recognising an impressive turnout for
Saturday's rally, Anne wanted to assure Patricia Hewitt and the "health bosses" that they "ain't seen nothing yet"
and outlined future campaign events (thanksgiving service at Guildford Cathedral in November, candle-light vigil and
further rallies in the coming months - keep a watch on the
Royal Surrey Action Group website).
Finally, she urged everyone to
continue to give their active and vociferous support to the campaign, which promises to be a long, hard battle.
