Guildford Philharmonic and Guildford Choral Society

On Saturday 12 November at 7.30 pm, Guildford Philharmonic and Guildford Choral Society once more join forces in
Guildford Cathedral to present an exquisite programme of French music featuring Faurs Requiem and Masques et
Bergamasques, and Poulenc's Gloria. The soloists are Mary Nelson (soprano), who studied at the Royal Academy of
Music, where she was recently elected as an Associate, and who is fresh from performing at the Proms; and Gavin
Carr (baritone), who is fast establishing himself in the front rank of the younger generation of singers. The
concert is conducted by Hilary Davan Wetton, well-known to local audiences and one of Britain's most versatile and
dynamic conductors. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01483 444777 and cost £19, £15,
(£3 children, students, ES40s and registered disabled). There are plasma screens in the Cathedral, so
wherever you sit in the Nave, you will have an excellent view. There will be a retiring collection for the
locally based charity The Prostate Project. More details from
their website.

Hedges

Hedges have been in the news recently. One member has complained that a neighbour's hedge is obstructing his
view and another that the hedges overhanging the pavement at the corner of Harvey Road and Chesham Road force
pedestrians into the road. Such problems are always best solved by agreement but the law has been stiffened
and redress is available in the last resort. Please make sure your hedges don't cause inconvenience.

Dog Mess on the Downs

Dog mess is not welcome anywhere. Our Chariman was on the Downs not long ago and a large dog relieved itself not
far from its owner and nothing was done about it. Please remember that children play on the Downs and cross the
Downs on the way to school. You are required to clear up dog mess and put it in the bins provided. Bread bags
are good; they are fairly small and don't have ventilation holes in them.

Yellow River Cafe

A member recommends The Yellow River Cafe in Chapel Street. In October we had the £6.95 two course lunch there.
The service was prompt, the food was hot and very tasty and no fuss was made when we asked for ordinary (free) tap water.
It has already become a popular lunch venue.

Guildford Chamber Choir 25th Anniversary Concert

Our main concert for this birthday year will be Handel's Israel in Egypt. This will be held in Holy Trinity Church
on Saturday 19 November at 7.30 pm, and we are very pleased to announce our guest conductor as Jeremy Summerly who is
currently the director of the Oxford Camerata and is also the Head of Academic Studies at the Royal Academy of Music.
The orchestra for the concert will be the Royal Academy Consort. Jeremy has written this about the work: "Handel was
capable of composing music at phenomenal speed. The oratorio Israel in Egypt was written within the single month of
October 1738 and takes its text from the Book of Exodus and The Psalms. The choir carries two-thirds of the storyline,
an unusually high proportion for a work of its type. Handel's choral writing is dazzling, nowhere more so than when the
Egyptians are plagued by rivers of blood, frogs, blotches, blains, flies, lice, locusts, hailstones, fire, and darkness.
Handel's virtuosic choral writing is complemented by an inventive orchestration which adds three trombones to the usual
Baroque orchestra of trumpets, drums, oboes, bassoons, and strings. Handel completes the line-up with a sextet of vocal
soloists in what is frequently described as an even finer work than Messiah. There is no more fitting challenge for a
choir celebrating its 25th anniversary than to tackle this masterpiece of eighteenth-century music-drama." This concert
is being given in support of The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice (Registered Charity) in Farnham, which provides free specialist
care to those facing a life-limiting illness and also to those who love and care for them. Tickets available from: The
Tourist Office, Tunsgate (tel. 01483 444334); the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice (tel. 01252 729400); Record Corner, Godalming
(tel. 01483 422006); or on The Door. Due to having the small orchestra, prices are £12 (Concessions at £8 and,
for students, £5)."

Ruling Passions

HTAG has bought some tickets for the Guildford School of Acting play "Ruling Passions" for Tuesday 18
October at 7.30 pm at The Bellairs Theatre, Millmead. As the title suggests it's a drama guaranteed to
do wonders for your circulation! If you are a senior member of HTAG and would like a ticket and transport,
or you know of such a member, please ring Jean on 573717. Other members are, of course, welcome. The GSA is
a training ground for young actors and live theatre deserves our support if only to encourage a new Ronnie Barker.
