Guildford High Street
In the 6 years that I have lived in Guildford I have never been able to fully appreciate just how beautiful our High Street is. Has anyone seen the High Street free of contractor's debris, hoarding and scaffolding? I wonder if the Council appreciates what a poor impression this creates both of the town and of those in charge? If you would like to find out when we can expect to see an improvement, click here to access the Surrey County Council website and send them your comments.

HTAG Music Evening

On Friday night members gathered together at 17 Austen Road to enjoy a music evening with a French theme. HTAG members are obviously a very talented bunch and a good time was had by all. At the interval there was an opportunity to socialise and enjoy excellent food and wine. For more photos click here. For full details of the programme click here.

Pewley Down Conservation Volunteers

Last Wednesday morning the volunteers met at 10.00 am at the top of Pewley Hill and followed the Ranger's truck to the area to be cleared. Remembrance Day Service
The Rev Joy Todd will conduct a short and simple Remembrance Day Service at the War Memorial outside Addison Court at 3.00 pm on Saturday, 8 November. Waste Management
Surrey Local Government Association wants your comments about Waste Management. Everyone knows that we produce huge amounts of waste, most of which now goes into big holes in the ground. Ways of reducing it, and alternative methods for its disposal, must be found. Look at a leaflet in the local library, or the Council Offices, or see the website: http://www.surreywaste.info.

University Chamber Choir Supports Local Appeal
Always happy to support a good cause, the University of Surrey Chamber Choir will perform a charity concert next month in aid of a building project at the Parish Church in Godalming. The concert on Saturday 1 November at 8pm at The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Godalming will include a complete performance of Mozart's Requiem, Mendelssohn's Hear My Prayer, and Faure's beautiful Cantique de Jean Racine, along with other choral favourites by Tallis and Grieg and Gorecki. Admission is free, with a retiring collection in aid of The Octagon Appeal. See the university website for more information.

Guildford Hydro Project
The present consultation finished at the end of September but there will be further consultations, so comments are still welcome. The consultants will send an interim report in mid October, and the partnership has been informed that the project is likely to be pronounced both economically and practically feasible. We anticipate that we will then be making bids for up to 200,000 to a variety of funding sources. Listed building consent will also be sought at this stage, since the tollhouse is grade 2 listed. The partnership is considering asking for financial support from local people, but will also seek support from the Council and other bodies. It is anticipated that all things being well the project could be working by the end of 2004, and the power station will be open as part of the Councils existing heritage day arrangements. National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies
Many HTAG members will have heard of NADFAS, the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies. The Wey Valley DFAS meets on the morning of the third Thursday of every month (bar July and August) in Shalford Village Hall. Several HTAG members also belong to the Wey Valley, including its current chairman, Pam Palmer. This friendly society has vacancies for new members at present. Lectures are free upon payment of the 35 annual subscription, but in addition there are occasional special interest study days locally, and visits by coach to museums and stately homes, for an extra charge. If you would like to talk about joining the Wey Valley, please get in touch with the membership secretary, Janet Maddock in Clifford Manor Road, on 01483 569074, or Pam on 01483 538761.
