Dear Road Rep,

Mobile Phone Masts

HTAG has made submissions to the Planning Dept in response to all the applications from Orange to install mobile phone masts in our area. We successfully opposed a large mast on top of Pewley Down and three 8m monopole masts - one near the Spike and others outside 59 Pewley Hill and 44 Harvey Road.

The latest application, for an 8m mast at Pewley Point, was withdrawn just before Christmas pending a meeting between representatives of Orange, GBC Officers, HTAG and our Councillors. The meeting is likely to take place in the week beginning Monday, 6 February. In addition we are trying to find out if the other four operators will require similar extra installations.

HTAG exists to represent your interests and not pull chestnuts out of the fire for Orange. Most members will want to oppose a mast on the Downs at all costs, some to resist an 8m mast near their own property or a school; others may want to improve the mobile phone coverage in our area so as to guarantee swift communications in an emergency or provide the latest 3G facilities. Many people will belong to a combination of categories. HTAG therefore has to prepare its case with some care and to do that we all need more information.

As a first step we intend to prepare a list of questions to send to Orange in advance of the meeting. For example people will want to know why the masts are needed at all, how many, what are the health risks, what are suitable sites, what are not..Would you please let me have your questions and the questions of your members by Monday, 16 January? We will then compile a list and send it to Orange in advance for detailed answers. We will also display it on the HTAG web-site and on our notice boards.

Yours sincerely,

Stephen Wright,
Chairman, HTAG
