Guildford's Town Crier and Beadle

If any business or charity wishes to use the services of the Beadle and Town Crier, Dave Peters, he can be contacted at 01483 532796, fax 01483 833489, or via this site. He is also available to give talks.

Guildford's Town Crier

Southhampton's Town Crier was in the High Street yesterday, standing in for the Guildford Town Crier Dave Peters. He was there to advertise Debenhams "Mega Day". The Town Crier can be hired to advertise your event. For more information contact this site. To see more photos click here. The Town Crier tradition started in ancient Greece, when heralds were used to announce the severing of relationships which would lead to an official proclamation of war. The herald would also be used to bear proposals of truce or armistice. The first use of Criers in the British Isles is said to date back to Norman times, when the cry "oyez, oyez, oyez", (old French for "hear ye") was used to draw the attention of the mostly illiterate public to matters of importance. Criers had to be able to read and write the proclamations. The Crier would read a proclamation, usually at the door of the local inn, then nail it to the door post - which is where the expression "posting a notice" comes from, as well as naming newspapers as the post.

Norah Casey

We have already reported the sad death in March 2006 of Norah Casey. Norah was a founder member of HTAG when it was set up 35 years ago and played a loyal and active part in it since that time. She had a great sense of integrity, a concern for others, a willingness to help out in any circumstances, and a knowledge of planning issues and problems which was of great benefit to us all. Her wide and intelligent interests made her an excellent companion. She was a friendly and sociable person and, together with her sister Cath, was rarely absent from our coffee mornings or road reps. meetings. Norah was much loved and will be sorely missed.

HTAG May Day Walk

HTAG members and their friends woke to early morning rain and mist on the hill tops. Not many were found at the top of St Martha's to celebrate the rising of the sun with the Morris Men and Women. Because of the weather they stayed away in droves and missed the best walk for many a year. The bank holiday coincided with 1 May this year and we were encouraged to wear appropriate flowers: Gordon Bridger was way ahead of us all, definitely the best dressed. Our circular walk took us from Puttenham to Cutmill and back via Puttenham Common. We saw deer, spring flowers, including a bluebell wood, and the birdwatchers we met near the ponds with their hi-tech visual aids told us of some of their exciting sightings. The weather turned out to be perfect and we ended with a beer and excellent light lunch in the garden of The Good Intent. To see a few photographs click here. Letter from Country Walks
"Dear Country Walkers, Since our last email, we have accompanied two groups on our first walking breaks of the season - at St David's, Pembroke, and at Swanage, Dorset. We all enjoyed some glorious walking in two of the most scenic parts of the country and, to our great delight, the weather was fine on both occasions! We hope to have another 'mini' website with photos from these walking breaks available soon. We were blessed with fine weather again over the last holiday weekend too, despite early morning rain which we escaped in Surrey. (More photos on the forthcoming website). Next weekend we have planned two very contrasting walks. Saturday's 11-mile Shere Millennium Trail embraces some of Surrey's most beautiful countryside and favourite villages whilst the Chiswick House walk on Sunday will be particularly enjoyed by those of you who love the Thames and its easy riverside paths. This is a lovely time of the year for walking with spring at last bursting into leaf and blossom. Many varieties of plants now in flower are bringing colour and gaiety back to the countryside. We hope to see you again soon. Kind regards, June and Aubrey, 020 7233 6563, or visit our website."
