Au Pairs by Lidia
Au pairs have been helping English families for many decades. Back in the '60's when Eastern Europe was locked behind the iron curtain girls, never boys, aged 18-25 would come from Spain, Sweden, Norway, France and Germany to stay with families and in return for a nice bedroom, meals and pocket money they helped the mother of the home with the children and light housework, attended a few English classes, joined the church choir and practiced English with their host family which undoubtedly improved their marital prospects! Today's au pair is quite different . . . . Click here to read on . . .

The conservation work was necessary to repair the stonework and make it more weatherproof, using sympathetic materials which worked with the building, rather than against it. Pewley Down Conservation Volunteers

On a beautiful Saturday morning the volunteers met to count wild flowers. They were joined on this occasion by a volunteer from the Grammar School who is doing his bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. To see Ashton's photo click here. The volunteers had with them a species list of plants from 1988 and wanted to establish how many of the plants are still there. Some, such as the Fragrant Orchid and Spotted Orchid, seem to have disappeared. While walking round they saw several Green Hairstreak Butterflies. These are a brilliant metallic green, and it is quite unusual to see them.

In 1977, the company created a department specifically to tune, repair and renovate modern pianos under his direction. Pewley Down Conservation Volunteers
The Pewley Down Volunteers will meet at 10.00 am at the Pewley Way entrance to the Downs on Saturday 15 May. If the weather is good they shall identify flowers so please bring a suitable plant book; if not we shall clear scrub. The session will end at 1.00 pm. Do come and join us if you are interested. Ankle boots and strong gloves are recommended. Children are welcome but are the responsibility of the adults who bring them. Further meetings will take place on Wednesday 16 June, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm to cut back dogwood; Saturday 3 July, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm to count orchids; Wednesday 11 August, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm to count butterflies; and Saturday 4 September, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm to count wild flowers. The Volunteers would like to have cattle or ponies grazing on Pewley Down soon. Grazing is the only way of keeping turf short on chalk grassland. This means providing fenced paddocks and water, and paying for animals from a conservation flock to come for a few months each year. Where animals do graze on public land in Surrey they are generally well liked, especially by children. For further information on the Pewley Down Volunteers go to our Societiespages.

Planning
Proposals for the development of the Bright Hill car park have been published. All 3 options entail a housing density of 70 dwellings per hectare or more. This will have a major impact on our area and HTAG will comment. But please acquaint yourselves with the plans; Stephen Wright has a copy, as does the Library and the Council offices. If you prefer visit the Guildford Borough Council website. Comments are due by 31 May although I daresay the deadline may be safely breached by a few days.

Opera Gala

HTAG Music Evening

Godalming harpist, 14-year old Amy Turk, played at the HTAG music evening for the first time last night. Everyone present was impressed by her performance and thoroughly enjoyed her choice of music. Afterwards Amy talked us through the mechanics of the harp, which is a much more complicated instrument to play than we realised. We sincerely hope that Amy will be able to join our group again for another of our music evenings. If you have not yet participated in HTAG's music evenings do come along, even if you don't sing or play, although of course performers are always welcome. Please click here for more photos.

A Fond Farewell to Gordon and Jean Bridger
This is Gordon and Jean's last day as Mayor and Mayoress of Guildford. Gordon has been an outstanding, innovative Mayor. The 6 lectures he sponsored showed Guildford as a centre of knowledge-based excellence to balance its image as a cobbled shopping centre. Jean has been an ever-gracious presence by his side and undertaken several duties in her own right. Members of HTAG will remember social events in the Guildhall, which they were able to enjoy because Gordon was Mayor. We congratulate them both on a very successful term of office and wish them well in their "retirement".

Slow Worms or Anguis Fragilis
The Slow-worm, Anguis Fragilis, is the gardener's friend. It is a legless lizard which eats slugs. They are rarely over a foot long, and the diameter of a pencil. There are many Slow-worms around in the Holy Trinity area and one may be nestling in your compost heap at this moment. It hibernates in the winter, mates in the spring, and the eggs are retained in the body until the young are born in late summer. Colours vary. It may be brown, copper, gold, or pinkish, and some have stripes. It can be mistaken for a snake and killed, although it is protected from injury by law. For pictures search on Google under Anguis Fragilis, or look in Amphibians and Reptiles of Surrey, Surrey Wildlife Trust.

GBC Planning Meeting
The next planning meeting is on Tuesday, 4 May at 2.00 pm, Millmead. The GBC Planning Committee met on 27 April to consider, among other things, the Pewley West Reservoir application. A site visit, as requested by Gordon Bridger and supported by Sarah Creedy, was granted, so a final decision has been deferred.

HTAG Music Evening
The next music evening is on Friday 7 May, 8.00 pm at 8 Pewley Bank, by the kind permission of Bob and Heather Bromham. All welcome. Please bring a plate of finger food and/or a bottle. Please let Stephen Wright (564021) have details of what you want to perform so that he can prepare a programme. On this occasion we will have a performance on the harp by Amy Turk.
