The Tsunami and the Navalady Children's Home
On 4 January we publicised an appeal by HOMSA (Hope Outreach Ministries South Asia) following the Tsunami disaster. Several people kindly donated money, including church collections. Local co-ordinator, Nigel Horrocks, thought he should let us know that the response was amazing. Homsa has been to Sri Lanka and has ordered 1000 shelters for 1000 families and are spending £100,000. A Children's home is being provided at a cost of £75,000 at Batticaloa. Four opticians are now in the North-East providing free eye care for two weeks from 28 February. Some people donated spectacles to Vision Aid Overseas and they gave many pairs of glasses to Homsa for this project. Thanks are due to all those who gave generously to Homsa. To read more about the Navalady Children's Home click here., or visit the HOMSA website.

Dear Country Walkers, We hope you have had a good winter and have escaped the 'flu, etc. Now that Spring is on its way (although it doesn't feel like it!), it's good to get out into the countryside again to enjoy fresh air, exercise and the first few signs of Spring. When we checked the first walk of the new season on Wednesday, we saw Hazel Catkins, Snowdrops, Gorse in flower and the first Primroses. To read on click here. Be a Tramp for a Day
On 10th April Charlotteville Jubilee Trust are holding a Sponsored 'Tramp' from the remains of the old Workhouse at Dorking to the Spike at Guildford. This is typical of the sort of walk a tramp would have made each day around the country, usually being allowed to stay only one night per month at a casual ward. Vagrants were constantly on the move. Help raise some money for the Trust and enjoy a walk on the North Downs Way. Fancy Dress acceptable! For more information and a sponsor's form call Josh on 01483 824998

Cycle Path on the Downs
The following letter was received via this site: "As a very keen cyclist whose whole family cycles regularly I believe cycling is a very strong way to improve not only people's lives through healthier living but through fewer cars on the roads etc. Guildford, apart from this area of the Pewley Hills and Downs is actually quite flat and near perfect for cycling to be encouraged but little has been done to support this transport. My gut response is to strongly support a cycle path across the downs linking Pewley Hill with Longdown Road. If we can encourage families to cycle across these routes and out to places like Newlands Corner then I believe we encourage cycling in safe environments and in general. However, although I strongly support a hardcore path along the back of the houses on the far side of the Downs I would want careful consideration of what path went across the main grass part of the Downs. The grassy open space of the Downs is very special and I'd be quite sad if the character of this for walkers, children and the general public was changed significantly. If, for example, they put a 'light' hardcore surface along the hedge it might be acceptable. Overall, I would very much like to see more support for cycling as transport, cycling to school and cycling for leisure in our area as it would significantly reduce car usage." Ciaran.Doran.

Proposed Houses on Bright Hill
The following letter was received via this site: "I was pleased to read that HTAG is urging the council to maintain the public views, NOT merely a 'chink' from Pocket Park. If you need further material for the objection, here is part of a letter I sent to the council last year. Hope it helps: - The latest report on Bright Hill makes light of some serious consequences of the proposed development. It cannot escape any visitor to the scene that the current Bright Hill footpath contains quite exceptional views which would be almost entirely obliterated by the proposal as it stands, the only exception being a limited view remaining from the pocket park. Walking from one end of the footpath to the other, the panoramic views of town and country currently give this area an atmosphere of openness and freedom which would be lost. It is wrong to work on the basis that views are available to the public only from pocket park. The loss of public views is quite unnecessary, because with some modification to the plans, it would be feasible to build on the site while still retaining them. Frankly, the height of the new buildings should be such that the townscape remains visible along the footpath. The resulting rooftop view would be far more typical of the area. It is simply not sufficient to keep a chink of townscape visible from the pocket park. Do not 'blight' Bright Hill." Ian Furlonger.
