National Cycle Route across the Downs

Some members have raised questions about the cycle path. Surrey County Council (SCC) is the agent which will put any plans into effect. In the absence of Alan Fordham, the Cycling Officer, I spoke today to David Curl at the SCC. Subject to any correction from Alan Fordham on Monday: the route was provisionally decided by the Local Committee on 9 December to follow the bridle path linking Pewley Hill with Longdown Road; should it be necessary a typical surface would be 2 metres of crushed limestone within a path 3 metres wide; the entire route might not be ready for 10 years although individual sections could be open earlier if funding permitted; no estimate at this stage can be given of the expected cycle traffic over the downs; to make your views known about the path you should write to: Mr Alan Fordham, Cycling Officer, SCC, Transportation Service, County Hall, Penrhyn Road, KINGSTON upon THAMES, KT1 2DN, or email alan.fordham@surreycc.co.uk

National Cycle Route across the Downs
Some of you will be aware of the proposal to establish a cycle path across the Downs as a link in the National Cycle Route. The immediate action agreed at a Local Committee meeting on 9 December was to put up signs to mark the route. On behalf of the Tyting Society Tim Harrold asked for a decision to be postponed on grounds of lack of consultation, safety and the effect on the environment - points with which we can agree. If the plan is fully implemented it could mean the laying of a path 3 metres wide with a 2 metre width surfaced with a layer of crushed limestone. If history is any guide the opinions of HTAG members will range from one extreme to the other. Please let Stephen know what you think on 564021 so he can express a representative HTAG view.

The Tsunami and the Navalady Children's Home
HTAG members have been sending Gordon Bridger old spectacles which he passes to Nigel Horrocks, who goes out to developing countries and distributes them (he is a retired ophthalmologist). He returned from Sri Lanka a few weeks ago. He told Gordon of the disaster which had overwhelmed a children's home in Sri Lanka, which was totally destroyed. The children all miraculously survived. This is a splendid opportunity to help people directly, and not through huge, well intentioned international collections which may take years to disburse and have high administrative costs . Gordon has spoken directly to the charity and has been told that all the funds you care to send will go directly and cost free to the Samaritans Home in Navalady.
