Carol Singing
Two carol singing parties set out on Wednesday 17 December, to raise money for the local charity, Crossroads. A large group of children, organised by Gina Redpath, started at 6.oo pm and sang their way along Addison Road and part of Harvey Road before retiring for a well-earned mince pie and a drink. The adult party met at 7.30 pm and took in 5 roads and 2 pubs. Afterwards we enjoyed baked potatoes and mulled wine provided by Ruth Coleman. Altogether we raised about 150 for Crossroads, 3 times more than we collected last year. May I thank all those who turned out on a cold night and sang so well, and also those who organised the refreshments which warmed those parts the cold weather had reached an hour earlier

The Mayor's Lectures
The next lecture, to be held at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 20 January at the Management School Lecture Theatre, University of Surrey, is called "Sleep: A Rhythmic Necessity", by Dr Derk-Jan Dijk who is the Director of the Surrey Sleep Research Centre.

Thomas Branson
Mr Tom Branson passed away recently on the Isle of Wight where he spent many happy Retirement years. He married Queenie (Jane) Wheeler at St. Saviours, Guildford, 65 years ago after joining the choir after moving from his native Abingdon to work for Pimms. He later worked for John Perrings for many years, living in Charlotteville, where he was an active member of both Holy Trinity and St. Luke's (now Addison House) communities. He laid the 'Tree of Life' carpet in St. Luke's Chapel, and ran the Youth Club in the Hall next door. Tom was cremated on the Isle of Wight, and his ashes were interred with his mother and twin sister in Abingdon on All Saints Day

St Mary's Church

The tower is the oldest part of St Mary's and it is best to start a tour of the church there, at its base. The Saxon settlers in this area would have become Christians in the 600's, and there was probably a timber church on this spot. In about 1050 the church was rebuilt in stone. Only the tower survives of the Saxon work. For more information on St Mary's click here. For more photos of the interior click here.

Holy Trinity Church
Holy Trinity, Guildford's civic church, is the only large Georgian church in Surrey. The medieval church on this site was destroyed when the tower and steeple collapsed in 1740; in 1763 a new church was built in the Palladian style, and this now comprises the nave of the present church. Holy Trinity is therefore rather unusual in that it dates from just after London's 'Classical' churches but predates the large number of 'Gothic' churches built in Queen Victoria's reign. For more information about Holy Trinity click here. For more photos of the interior click here.

HTAG Music Evening

On Friday night members gathered together at 17 Austen Road to enjoy a music evening with a French theme. HTAG members are obviously a very talented bunch and a good time was had by all. At the interval there was an opportunity to socialise and enjoy excellent food and wine. For more photos click here.

Pewley Down Conservation Volunteers

Last Wednesday morning the volunteers met at 10.00 am at the top of Pewley Hill and followed the Ranger's truck to the area to be cleared. After a talk on the morning's work by the Ranger, Brian Parnell, the volunteers helped themselves from the selection of tools made available and set to work under his direction.
