Global Warming

I believe it is no longer possible to doubt the evidence that the Earth is warming quite rapidly. It is most likely due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere but even if it isn't greenhouse gases are aggravating the problem and their emission is due to human activity. If the predictions made for 2050 and beyond are accurate our way of life in this country will have to change in ways which we may not like and some other parts of the globe will become uninhabitable. Young people in their 30s will live to experience serious changes and children born now will probably be alive in 2100 when conditions will be much worse. For the first time everyone, whatever their age, sex, race, country of origin, religion or status, has an interest in trying to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. We can do nothing about America, India or China but our children and grandchildren will not forgive us if we in Guildford do not play our part.

Bjrn Lomborg's book "The Skeptical Environmentalist" gives a scholarly account of doom-laden predictions which have failed to materialise. Just possibly this may be one of them. He may also be right that some of the measures currently proposed will be ineffective and that the remedy lies in technical fixes of various kinds. But it is an enormous gamble to assume that everything will be fine and it cannot possibly be wrong to reduce the amount of energy we consume and support those businesses which take the problem seriously.

We shall be putting on the web some of the many ways you can save energy and I we invite you to send in your own suggestions.
