HTAG Carol Singing
A good crowd of carol singers set out yesterday to serenade Charlotteville. We raised about 115 for Crossroads and sang Russell Chamberlin's favourite carols in two pubs. Afterwards we were very glad to return to Ruth's warm living room where she and Jean provided us with delicious mulled wine, baked potatoes and cheese, apple cake, crisps etc. I thank them, all the singers, and those who filled our collecting tins, for another successful carol singing party. The children did particularly well to stay the course on a raw night.

Save the Royal Surrey
At the last Road Reps meeting a draft was agreed for the letter to Anne Milton et al about the RSCH. Please let Stephen Wright know if you would like an e-copy via this site. To find out more about the campaign visit the Save The Royal Surrey website.

HTAG Funds
With the surplus funds the Committee has decided to pay outstanding expenses, buy a half share in a new noticeboard for the school site and print some copies of a booklet explaining what HTAG is and does. HTAG has received a number or good ideas about what to do with the balance and will report in due course.

Russell Chamberlin in action

"All of us who knew Russell will be saddened and diminished by his death on 8 December and our condolences for this sad loss are extended to Linda, Giles and Katherine. Russell had lived amongst us for some 40 years and had made a splendid contribution to not only Guildford, but Holy Trinity Ward and to Charlotteville, where he lived. He was born in Jamaica but came to England at a very early age and was brought up in Norwich. To read on click here. Russell's funeral is at 14.30 on Wednesday, 20 Dec at the Guildford Crematorium. You are invited to tea afterwards at the Guildford Institute. No flowers, please, but donations to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Waverley Lane, FARNHAM, GU9 8BL. Bright Hill View
The newsletter referred to the potential loss of the view from the top of Bright Hill when houses/flats are built on the car park. If you nominate that as your favourite view it might stay the hands of the developers to the extent of reducing the roof line of the uppermost buildings. There are special cards you can use - contact this site to obtain one. Otherwise a postcard, letter or email to the Environmental and Design Services, Millmead, will register one more vote.

HTAG Carol Singing
The traditional HTAG Carol singing party will meet at 7.00 pm at the top of Bright Hill on Wednesday, 20 December. We need collectors as well as enthusiastic singers. It's good fun and aids Crossroads, a local Carers charity. Please help to make this a bumper year.

High Street Road Surface
In response to complaints by the Guildford Society a motion was proposed at the Guildford Borough Council meeting last week that GBC should perhaps have a rolling maintenance programme to rectify the Surrey County Council failure to maintain this unique surface in a unique town centre. The motion was defeated by four votes. If you have a view on this issue, please click here to send in your views. HTAG has in the past applied for this surface to be listed, which to date has been refused.

Pewley Down Conservation Volunteers Update 2006

Male Chalkhill Blue

Conservation Volunteers
If you walked on parts of Pewley Down during late July or Early August clouds of blue butterflies would have risen at you feet. These blue butterflies were Chalk-hill Blues and numbers this summer on the Downs were higher than at any time in recent memory. The male Chalk-hill Blue is one of the easier blue butterflies to recognise. It is slightly larger than the other blues (with the exception of the very rare and reintroduced Large Blue) with a distinctive pale, powder, blue colour and a fairly broad black sub terminal border to the upperwing.
