Country Walks Sept 04

Sunday 19 September, 6 miles or 7 miles or 10 miles, A/B grade.

Grade: Easy paths, mostly level, on trackways, field paths and towpaths. Grade A applies to 6 or 7 miles; the B grading to the longer 10-mile route.

Meet: at 1045 outside Yvonne Arnaud Theatre on A281, parking at adjacent Millbrook carpark, following 'mask' signs through Guildford to theatre.

Rail Travellers: Depart London Waterloo 0945, arrive Guildford 1025 or depart London Victoria 0919, arrive Clapham Junction 0926, depart Clapham Junction 0953, arrive Guildford 1025, for accompanied 15-minute walk to theatre. Four trains hourly back to London.

Lunch: at The Withies, Compton, renowned for its excellent fare and delightful garden setting.

The Walk: Contrasting landscapes: delightful riverside paths with locks, ducks, bridges and boats; wooded paths and pilgrim routes, the ancient town of Godalming with its wealth of interesting buildings and history. A waterside tea at Farncombe Boat House, after 7 miles, followed by a 10-minute walk to Farncombe Station and a 5-minute train ride back to Guildford, or, alternatively, fortified by tea, walk a further 3 miles along the towpath back to Guildford. A third option is to finish at Godalming railway station which we pass on the route after 6 miles, with an 8-minute train ride back to Guildford.

Estimated Finishing Time: 1500 at Godalming (after 6 miles; train departs 1540, arrives Guildford 1548), 1630 at Farncombe (after 7 miles and tea; train departs 1644, arrives Guildford 1648) or 1800 at Guildford (after 10 miles and tea; train departs for London 1818, arrives Waterloo 1858).
