Country Walks June 05 Update

Dear Country Walkers

We have just had a cancellation for the popular Cotswold Weekend which we are offering for the last time this year. We are based in Winchcombe, staying in centrally-placed accommodation, with two excellent restaurants. There will be a choice each day of either B grade walks (repeating the spectacular routes of previous weekend breaks) or new A grade walks, which will include in addition to scenic but easy walking, a trip on the steam train to Cheltenham. For further details, see below.

The vacancy which has arisen is for a twin or double room with private bathroom which can be used either for single occupancy or double occupancy, at Gower House, an excellent b and b in the heart of Winchcombe and recommended by our guests many times in the past.

If you are interested in this vacancy, please phone or email to check availability. Your place will then be reserved and confirmed on receipt of your booking form and deposit.

Kind regards
June and Aubrey

The Cotswolds (NEW A Grade or Former B Grade)

Friday 22 - Sunday 24 July
Double or Twin £169, Single and Single Occupancy £179: all prices per person

1 single occupancy of twin or double room with private bathroom at Gower House; TV lounge, large secluded garden, parking, 4 diamonds; a few minutes walk from the centre of Winchcombe and from the restaurants.

The price includes bed and breakfast, group dinners on 2 nights, one at the highly-acclaimed Wesley House restaurant, the other at the popular White Hart Inn, restaurant gratuities, 2 guided full-day walks with a choice of A or B grades, 1 evening walk; the price excludes lunches, train fares (A Grade), drinks, teas, entrance fees and other expenses of a personal nature. Please note that car-sharing will be necessary on one day - lifts provided for those without cars.

Friday Walk: (Both grades)
After a welcome meeting at Wesley House, we tour historic Winchcombe, which today is a gem, still unspoilt, delightfully set in a great bowl of rolling hills, a perfect, self-contained working town rather than a tourist showpiece, the very best base for walking the Northern Cotswolds.

Saturday Walks:
Stanton, Stanway and Didbrook (A' grade - 4 miles: entirely flat terrain) After touring the unspoilt villages of Stanton and Stanway, and visiting the church and blacksmith, we walk across fields with beautiful vistas to lovely Wood Stanley, Didbrook and Toddington. Here, we take the historic steam train to Greet for a pub lunch. After lunch, we board the train again for a journey to Cheltenham, where there's an option to take a bus to the town centre, or simply return on the train to Toddington for tea.

Stanton, Stanway and Snowshill (B' grade - 8 miles: undulating terrain) Having visited Stanton and Stanway (see A' grade), we traverse some of the finest Cotswold countryside to high tranquil pastures and the hilltop village of Snowshill for lunch, either at The Manor or The Snowshill Arms. Then a splendid ridge walk with views over the Vale of Evesham to distant horizons before returning to Stanton. (Optional visit to Snowshill Manor, National Trust)

Sunday Walks:
Hailes and Sudeley - (A' grade - 5 miles: mostly flat terrain, one 15-minute gradual ascent and descent) Superb walking along old pilgrim routes, visiting the lovely old church at Hailes with its outstanding wall paintings, the Abbey, then on to lunch at Hailes Fruit Farm. After lunch more magnificent scenes (and the one hill of the weekend, which is long and gradual rather than steep and will be taken at an easy pace!) before descending to Sudeley Castle and tea.

Hailes, Farmcote and Sudeley - (B' grade - 8 miles: undulating terrain) Same route as A' grade to Hailes, then we start our ascent to the high wolds and our picnic amid splendid scenery before descending to Sudeley Castle, with magnificent views accompanying us the whole way.

Rail Access: Regular rail service from London to Cheltenham and onward travel by bus or taxi
