HTAG Seniors' Lunch at The Parrot, Shalford

The 2003 garden open day was a huge success and raised funds, which are traditionally used for the benefit of our senior citizens. Holy Trinity Amenity Group is not just pressure group trying to maintain the fabric of our fine town and its associated townscape. It also tries to involve its citizens in group activities promoting friendship and social cohesion of the ward. The Seniors' Luncheon is just such a group. Many of us meet at the Sandford Arms (now Rogues Wine Bar) on the final Thursday of the month, but the luncheon was made open to several who are unable to attend the coffee mornings. What a treat they had. To find out more about the lunch party click here. To see more photos of the lunch click here.

HTAG Winter Bridge Festival

The HTAG 2004 Winter Bridge Festival was a great success. Much of this success is due to the fact that it was held in The Guildhall by kind permission of Gordon Bridger whose Mayoral year this is. The Mayor may use this historic building privately on very few occasions while in office and The HTAG Bridge Circle had the honour and privilege to be invited to use this venue for their winter tournament. All the Bridge players dressed appropriately and the ladies looked stunning. There was a jolly atmosphere and the food and wine excellent, but we settled to the main activity of the evening and enjoyed a splendid evening of bridge. The competition was based on an individual rubber bridge score having rotated partners throughout the evening. Our thanks are due to a whole team of cooks, wine buyers, prize providers, table movers, competition organisers and others, most of whom seemed to be our Bridge Organiser, Colin Callegari. I can only remember one person who won a well-deserved prize for her skill at the card table - our Lady Mayor, Jean Bridger. For a brief history of the Bridge Club click here.

From the Mayor . . .
A team from Vision Aid is going out to Zambia in June so if anyone has old specs please pass them to the Mayor at GBC. Is there anyone in the Holy Trinity Ward with medical experience who would be interested in acting as a link between a very small hospital and health clinic, and Royal Surrey County Hospital? Their function would be to mobilise contacts and help for some desperately needed medical units in Mukono, a District in Uganda, and Guildford. Again, contact the Mayor at GBC if you can help. The Mayor is also looking for someone who could lend him a reasonably portable record player (33 rpm) for a couple of days in late April.

Planning News
There is a new planning application for the building of a very large hotel complex on Bridge Street/Onslow Street/Bedford Road. The proposed building will include "a gaming facility and 5 retail outlets". The HTAG planning group will object, as it did to an earlier application, on the general grounds of scale and the increased opportunity for gambling/drinking which it will provide in an area where there is already rising drink related town centre violence. The planning references are: 04/P/00593 (for permission to demolish buildings in a conservation area), and 04/P/00606 (to redevelop the site). Please make your views known to Carol Humphrey, The Department of Environmental and Planning Services, GBC. The deadline is 14 April but in practice submissions will be accepted later provided they are received before GBC considers its verdict.

HTAG Theatre Outing
Still tickets left to this hilarious production of "Round the Horn . . . . Revisited". Cost of the tickets, to include coach, is £30 each. Please phone Angie on 563495 for further details and to book.

The Mayor's Lectures
During the 5th of the Mayor's lectures Sallie Thornberry outlined the work of the Guildford-Uganda link committee. Two contributions stand out: Andy Kittow, a chemistry teacher at RGS, described help given to the Pallisa Skills Training Centre and a neighbouring school for orphans; and Nigel Horrocks told us how our unwanted spectacles could transform people's lives in Uganda. Both schemes are carefully monitored to ensure help reaches those who need it most.

Farmers' Market
Don't forget the Farmers' Market in Guildford High Street on Tuesday 6 April.
